Welcome to Autism and Marriage!
Marriages between typically developing people and people with autism are mixed-neurological marriages.
They’re every bit as much mixed marriages as mixed-orientation marriages and mixed-faith marriages. The difference is that in mixed-neurological marriages, the incompatibilities aren’t sexual orientation or religion, but neurologically based communication incompatibilities that can cause distress in both partners.
If you’re in a mixed-neurological marriage, you may be experiencing relationship dynamics that are unfamiliar and even incomprehensible to people who don’t have any experience with autism. Getting support from someone who understands isn’t always easy as their is scant acknowledgement that mixed marriages even exist.
Hopefully this website and my sister sites will offer helpful resources. I also have a brand new online course available for typically developing partners on Udemy called “Married to Autism? Your Journey to Connection and Ease.”
